Deborah James (40) is terminally ill with colon cancer. In 2016, the BBC presenter was diagnosed for the first time. Two years later, doctors informed her that she was cured. But the cancer came back – this time in the final stages.
The British woman wants to spend her last days surrounded by her family in her parents’ house near London. All treatments have now been discontinued. When James leaves this world, her husband, Sebastien Bowen, and their two children, Hugo, 14, and Eloise, 12, will stay behind. Despite her death, the podcaster always wants to be with her loved ones. That’s why she leaves her children and her husband letters, as she tells the “Times”.
Deborah James found it difficult to decide on the letters
In it, she gives Hugo and Eloise tips for their first dates and dedicates kind words to them before they get married. Writing the letters wasn’t easy: “It’s hard to decide what to do: you don’t want to open up the wounds on every birthday and spoil it for them. But at the same time, I want them to receive letters and fun messages on their milestones.”
There should also be gifts for her children: for her daughter “Tiffany bracelets and earrings” and for her son “a nice pen or a nice wallet or cufflinks”.
“Don’t marry chicks”
She also has a message for her husband. Deborah James wishes he could be happy with another woman. However, she warns him: “Don’t be fooled, don’t marry a chick.” She is now more dependent than ever on Sebastien Bowen. Because her health update is sobering: “I can no longer use my legs and I’m incredibly weak. My husband has to carry me everywhere.”
How much time the mother of two has left is uncertain. The preparations for her funeral have already been made. The BBC presenter, who launched the Bowelbabe Fund for women affected by colon cancer, wants a cremation. Your ashes should have a place in the family kitchen “for a while”. Later they will then be scattered. (bsn)
