Legendary Puerto Rican singer-songwriter José Feliciano, who has “withstood the test of time,” will receive the first-ever Billboard Leyenda Award during the awards ceremony. Billboard Latin Music Awards 2022 to be held in Miami on September 29, the organizers announced on Wednesday.

Born in Lares, Puerto Rico, and settled with his family in New York when he was 5 years old, José Monserrate Feliciano García, better known as José Feliciano, is an international music pioneer with more than 60 years of experience.

The artist, who was born blind, created an inimitable style and is recognized as the first Latino to successfully cross over into the English-speaking music market, opening doors for other generations of artists.

In addition, he is considered a virtuoso acoustic guitar player, and with his powerful and unmistakable voice he has successfully traversed genres such as pop, rock, soul, jazz, ballads, bolero, mariachi and bachata.

He has published more than 600 songs, of which he has composed a hundred and has recorded more than 60 albums. His album sales are estimated at 50 million copies.

His interpretations of songs such as “Merry Christmas”, “Light my fire” and “What will it be” are already classics of the Latin American songbook and endure through generations, as the organizers of these awards point out, which will be broadcast by the Hispanic network Telemundo.

Other of his songs such as “I spend my life thinking”, “You have thrown me into oblivion” and “To say goodbye” also swell the repertoire of most listened to and sung Latin American songs.

José Feliciano is considered a bilingual icon in English and Spanish, and has performed alongside figures such as Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Helen Hayes and Barry Manilow, among others.

His documentary “José Feliciano, behind this guitar”, which delves into the figure of this universal Puerto Rican nine-time Grammy winner, can be seen from the 29th of this month in the United States through the Peacock platform.

The Billboard Legend Award will be presented to Feliciano during the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards ceremony, which will be held at the Watsco Center in Miami, South Florida (USA).
