South African actress Charlize Theron has appealed to her community to come to the aid of the victims of Durban, devastated by unprecedented floods.

“My home, South Africa, is going through an extraordinarily difficult time…”. In a message posted on Instagram on Tuesday, Charlize Theron appealed to her subscribers to help those affected by the deadly floods that occurred last week in the Durban region. At least 448 people have been killed in the landslides that have caused chaos in the port city conurbation of 3.9 million people, the epicenter of the disaster in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Residents have been deprived of drinking water for nine days, because 80% of the city’s network has been impacted. And nearly 4,000 houses were razed, and more than 13,500 damaged.

On the sidelines of the military means deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Oscar-winning actress asked her community to make donations for the victims. “[…] I know that the world is particularly suffering at the moment, and that the citizens of the world are already being asked a lot, but I hope that you will draw from your heart to help”, she wrote, adding that the organizations of the KwaZulu-Natal were “in shock” and residents were running out of food and water. Other personalities have also used their Instagram page to mobilize their fans. Actor and choreographer Somizi Mhlongo was the first to call for help. The rapper Cassper Nyovest, the businesswoman Shauwn Mkhize or the DJ Tira followed him in particular.
