Mickey Gilley has died at the age of 86. The musician died on Saturday (May 7) surrounded by his family in Branson, Missouri.

This was confirmed by Pasadena Mayor Jeff Wagner in a statement. “Pasadena has lost a true legend.”

And further: “It was a great honor for me to know this man for most of my life,” it says. “Mickey was a true musical talent who had 42 singles on the top 40 country charts over two decades.” In 2020, a street in the Texas city was named after Gilley, Mickey Gilley Boulevard.

Won a Grammy in 1981

The country singer and pianist has enjoyed numerous successes in his genre. These include the songs “Stand By Me”, “Room Full of Roses” or “Lonely Nights”. In all, he had 17 number one hits on the country charts. In 1970 he also opened a large club in Pasadena called «Gilley’s».

The film “Urban Cowboy” with John Travolta (68) was later shot there. In 1981, Gilley won a Grammy with his band. Overall, he has been honored with the Academy of Country Music Awards six times. Most recently, he helped run the Mickey Gilley Grand Shanghai Theater in Branson.
