discover the incredible cachet touched by the interpreter of Darth Vader

Hollywood star with the famous recognizable voice, James Earl Jones has built a solid career in more than sixty years and nearly 190 roles. Among his star roles in the cinema we find of course his performance for Darth Vader in the saga Star Wars cult. Still, he wasn’t the director’s first choice. George Lucas.

It was not the first choice of Georges Lucas

The director first thought of Orson Welles to do the voice of Darth Vader, before changing his mind, thinking that Welles’ voice was – rightly – far too identifiable. It was that of James Earl Jones which was retained.

Perfectly humble, the latter refused to be credited in the credits of the episodes A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, thinking his contribution to the films wasn’t really significant. He will be credited on Return of the Jedi.

Very low pay

In an interview, the actor indicated the very limited fee for a contribution that entered the history of cinema: only $7,000 for the first film; even if, this sum was very important for him at the time.

“Irvin Kershner gave me a K7 with David Prowse’s voice doing Darth Vader’s. It was scary. When George came to advise me, he said to me: “I don’t know if we did well, we’ll see what happens” explained Jones. “I naturally wanted to do something interesting, more subtle, with variations and all that. But George said to me: “no no! You have to keep your voice on the same tone, because he is not human”.

James Earl Jones, a beautiful filmography

The opportunity to return to the course of Todd Jones alias James Earl Jones. It is an American actor who, very young, discovered a passion for the theater. During the 1960s and 1970s, he became a star on Broadway. He embarked on the conquest of cinema in Stanley Kubrick’s film in 1964, “Doctor Strangelove”.

He accumulates shootings and works with great actors. His build and his voice allow him to be more and more solicited and lend his voice to Darth Vader in the Star Wars saga, as we have just seen. He played in adventure films like “Conan the Barbarian” as well as “Allan Quatermain and the City of Lost Gold” in 1987. A few years later, he lent his voice to Mufasa in “The Lion King” before to be solicited by George Lucas in 2005 in the last part of the saga, “Star wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”. A very good career.

Cinema, a suffering sector

In the weeks and months to come, Objeko will not fail to tell you about the news of French and international cinema. In our columns, we often have the opportunity to talk about actors and actresses. During the Covid crisis, the cinema sector suffered a lot with theaters that had to be closed for many months. A complicated situation for the sector.

Moreover, in 2022, the crowds are not really there. Indeed, many movie fans have turned to streaming platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime. This is a site where you can watch thousands of hours of content for a reduced price. But it must still be said that the cinema experience is not the same, especially when you go to see a blockbuster movie like Star Wars or Marvel.

Large multiplexes also rely heavily on additional sales such as Popcorn to generate profits. Every Wednesday, a dozen films are released in theaters. What we notice is that the films stay on screen for less and less time. Especially since there has been a traffic jam phenomenon with the Covid crisis. Once released in theaters, most films are then shown on television.
