Pocahontas, who inspired the Disney film, is believed to be the 12th great-grandmother of the “Fight Club” actor.
Rumors had been circulating for a long time in Andrew Norton’s family, without it being really confirmed… Until the day when the actor was invited to the show “Finding your roots”, a show that explores the ancestral history of certain personalities.
The presenter, Henry Louis Gate Jr, reveals to him that “Pocahontas is indeed your 12th great-grandmother. You have a direct paper trail. No doubt about it”.
Pocahontas would have married John Rolfe, a British colonist who turns out to be the twelfth great-grandfather of the actor, on April 5, 1614. From their union was born a son, Thomas Rolfe.
Pocahontas would then have died three years later, in 1617. John Rolfe would have breathed his last in 1622.I realize how much we are only a small piece of human history”explains Edward Norton, visibly moved.
The actor also discovered during the show that one of his other ancestors owned slaves. “It’s part of the history of this country and we have to deal with it.”he concluded.
