ESC 2022: faux pas just before the show – that has bitter consequences for the stars

RTL: That’s how it all started at the broadcaster

The private TV station RTL went on the air on January 2, 1984 in Germany. At that time the station was called RTL plus. The abbreviation “RTL” is derived from the name “Radio Television Luxembourg”. The TV station was created as an offshoot of the German-language radio program “Radio Luxemburg”.

show description

On May 10th he goes ESC 2022 with the semi-finals at the start. But so shortly before the show there is now a big faux pas – and that has bitter consequences for the artists.

The anticipation of music fans in Europe is great: In a few days the ESC 2022! Before the grand finale on May 14th, the countries have to qualify for participation via the semifinals.

ESC 2022: Big faux pas affects the performances of the musicians

In addition to hosts Italy, France, Spain and Great Britain, Germany has already qualified for the final. This means that 35 of the 40 participating countries will take part in the semi-finals. But for the artists of the semi-finalists, it’s getting really big. The stage in Turin will not be as operational until the live shows as was actually promised!

Those are them ESC-Winners of previous years:

  • 2021: Italy – Måneskin with “Zitti e buoni”
  • 2019: Netherlands – Duncan Laurence with “Arcade”
  • 2018: Israel – Netta with “Toy”
  • 2017: Portugal – Salvador Sobral with “Amar pelos dois”
  • 2016: Ukraine – Jamala with “1944”
  • 2015: Sweden – Måns Zelmerlow with “Heroes”
  • 2014: Austria – Conchita Wurst with “Rise Like a Phoenix”
  • 2013: Denmark – Emmelie de Forest with “Only Teardrops”
  • 2012: Sweden – Loreen with “Euphoria”
  • 2011: Azerbaijan – Ell & Nikki with “Running Scared”
  • 2010: Germany – Lena with “Satellite”

And that has bitter consequences: As “ESC compact” reports, numerous productions and performances at ESC 2022 have to be changed at short notice. The kinetic sun on stage consists of multiple arcs. They are fitted with headlights on one side and light-emitting diodes on the other. Taken together, this results in a large LED screen.

ESC 2022: stage breakdown just before the start

Actually, the individual countries should be able to decide whether the spotlight side or the LED wall is used during the performance. In addition, there should also be the possibility that the bows move during the performances. But now it came out: The built-in motors do not have enough power to position the individual arches correctly.

Another problem: the constant movement could further damage the already damaged motors. That’s why the Italian broadcaster RAI, which organizes the spectacle, according to “ESC compact‘ decided that the LED side would not be used at all.
