Even if the Eurovision Song Contest is supposed to be a non-political European music festival, it will probably become more political than ever in 2022. Because while Europe is meeting for a peaceful hit party in Turin, bombs are falling 2,000 kilometers to the east.

Ukraine is favorite at the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest

Although the entry by Italian duo Mahmood and Blanco is already a hit, there is every indication that Ukraine will snatch victory. The betting shops see the country, which has been hit by the Russian war of aggression, clearly in the lead. The band Kalush Orchestra will represent the Ukraine in Turin, Italy. If the bookmakers have their way, the group is sure to win – not least out of solidarity. “Stefania” is the name of the song that the six Ukrainian musicians want to present to a worldwide audience when they reach the final. The song is a mix of rap and Ukrainian folk music. A warbling flute alternates with hymn-like Stefania calls and brisk hip-hop passages. Rapper Oleh Psjuk wrote the song before the outbreak of war and dedicated it to his mother, as the 27-year-old told the German Press Agency.
