A friend of the artist and the Vienna Volksoper confirmed the death of the successful soprano in her Austrian adopted home to the German Press Agency.
The singer, born Renate Franke, was not only known for her performances in leading opera houses around the world, but also as an actress in homeland and hit films such as “Fräulein vom Amt” and “Wunschkonzert”, which she shot mainly in the 1950s .
Originally, Holm worked as a dental assistant to fund her vocal training. After 15 music films, she had her first major success on stage with the leading role in the operetta “Walzertraum” at the Volksoper in 1957. Three years later she engaged Herbert von Karajan to the Vienna State Opera. Appearances at the Salzburg Festival and in opera houses from Buenos Aires to Moscow followed.
Holm’s repertoire ranged from Mozart to Verdi to operettas and modern works. In addition, the singer maintained the tradition of the Wienerlied.
