Sam Raimi’s film starring Benedict Cumberbatch has been a huge success since its release last Wednesday. In four days, it has already been seen by a million spectators in France.
Successful return for Doctor Strange. The character played by Benedict Cumberbatch, whose last solo adventure dates back to 2016, is a full house. Released last Wednesday in France, the latest Marvel production has already been seen by a million spectators, announced Disney this Sunday.
In the United States, where the film has been available since Friday, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has already grossed $90 million on Friday alone. According to initial estimates, the blockbuster should raise between 160 and 180 million dollars by the end of the weekend.
A very impressive score, stronger than The Batman, which totaled $134 million last March after its first weekend. Note however that the new adventure of the batman lasts 3 hours, and that Doctor Strange 2 only lasts two hours, and therefore benefits from more sessions.
The first adventure of Doctor Strange, in 2016, earned “just” $85 million in its first weekend of operation. Appeared since in Infinity Way, Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Homethe character benefits from the success of these three productions, among the most popular in the MCU.
“Darker, more disturbing areas”
Under the direction of Sam Raimi, director of the trilogy Spiderman with Tobey Maguire between 2002 and 2007, Doctor Strange 2 develops around the “Multiverse”, this infinite set of realities that was unlocked during the last adventures of the spider-man, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
After saving the Earth in the first installment, the wizard in the red cape this time meets a teenager (played by Xochitl Gomez) with the power to open portals to different universes, an ability coveted by a demon that will have to fight Dr. Strange.
Each of the worlds visited having its own reality, the magician encounters doubles of himself, some having trajectories completely different from his own. This “sequel pushes the fantasy genre into darker, more disturbing areas,” the film’s team said in a statement.
Returning stars from the first film include Benedict Wong as “Master of the Mystical Arts” and Elizabeth Olsen as the mighty Avenger “Wanda Maximoff.” Many key characters from the MCU also make an appearance.
