The famous Gauls are back on the big screen in this new opus directed by Guillaume Canet, with a colossal budget of 65 million euros.

The irreducible Gauls are back on the big screen! More than ten years after their last adventures, Asterix and Obelix: At Her Majesty’s Servicethe two heroes created by Goscinny and Uderzo return in Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom. The new blockbuster signed Guillaume Canet with a pharaonic budget of 65 million euros has just unveiled its first trailer.

These first images say a little more about the plot and the stakes of the feature film, which will therefore take place in the heart of ancient China. Asterix (Guillaume Canet) and Obelix (Gilles Lellouche) are on a mission to rescue the Empress’s only daughter, Princess Fu Yi (Julie Chen), imprisoned following a coup d’etat ordered by a prince named Deng Tsin Quin (Bun Hay Mean). The two acolytes are helped in this adventure by Graindemaïs (Jonathan Cohen), a Phoenician merchant who passes himself off as Gaul and his faithful warrior Tat Han (Leanna Chea), with whom Obélix will fall in love. But Julius Caesar (Vincent Cassel) could well disrupt their plans since he will try to become the new emperor of China.

Marion Cotillard is Cleopatra

This long-awaited new part of the franchise is therefore directed by Guillaume Canet, who succeeds Laurent Tirard, director in 2012 ofAsterix & Obelix: At the service of Her Majesty, which unfortunately did not convince the critics. The pictures of this trailer, released Thursday, January 5, show plenty of special effects and attention to detail. The realization seems to pay homage to the Chinese genre film with an important place attributed to martial arts fights. Note that for the first time on screen Obélix is played by another actor than Gérard Depardieu: Gilles Lellouche seems rather comfortable in this new costume.
