It’s a scene that stunned guests and onlookers at the 94th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Calif.: Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage. As a reminder, the actor had seen red following a joke about the shaved head of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia. A few minutes later, Will Smith went back on stage to receive the Oscar for best actor, for the film “The Williams Method”.
During the same evening, Will Smith was seen, looking crestfallen, chatting with several actors: Denzel Washington, Bradley Cooper and Tyler Perry. Three months after this event, Tyler Perry revealed what Will Smith had said to him that evening: “When I went to see him, he was devastated. He couldn’t believe what had just happened… He couldn’t believe he had done it.”he says.
If he was seen in his company, Tyler Perry denies having wanted to support Will Smith: “I wasn’t comforting him, just calming the situation down,” he explained. “Trust me it was horrible for everyone in the room as well as Chris who reacted in the best possible way”, he continued. And to add: “But I want you to understand that it was also very painful for Will. That’s no excuse. He was totally wrong to do that, but something clicked inside him”.
