Jack Lang “overwhelmed by sadness”: he mourns the death of a famous friend


A lover of the arts, Jack Lang has held the post of Minister of Culture on several occasions. Close to artistic circles, the current president of the Arab World Institute, shared his immense grief at having lost one of his famous friends on his Twitter account, this Sunday, July 3.

Minister of Culture under the presidency of François Mitterrand from 1981 to 1986, Jack Lang is a general arts lover. His love affair with the artistic world is marked by crushes and encounters. Meetings that have sometimes led to real friendships, as with Peter Brook, who died on July 2 in Paris. Jack Lang said to himself “overwhelmed by sadness” on his account Twitter.

“Peter Brook was my friend. Musician of phrasing, conductor, he constantly kept his audience spellbound. Peter leaves an “empty space” in the art world, wrote Jack Lang on Twitter, this Sunday, July 3. A message imbued with emotions, melancholy, but also positive vibes: “Like all legends, he will reign over the realm of the text for a long time to come.” Winner of several Molière awards, Peter Brook made a name for himself through his innovative interpretations of plays from the great international repertoire, and more particularly of Shakespeare’s classics.

Culture at the heart

Music lover at heart and driven by the desire to see the French share the love of the 4th art together, Jack Lang created the Fête de la Musique, celebrated every June 21 since 1982.
