Jonathan Levine to Direct ‘Dirty Dancing’

After it was announced at the end of April that Jennifer Gray would be in the “Dirty Dancing” sequel, Jonathan Levine was introduced as the director.

the essentials in brief

  • The cult film “Dirty Dancing” is getting a sequel with Jennifer Gray after 33 years.
  • Now it’s clear who will direct: Jonathan Levine.
  • The 45-year-old has mainly filmed comedies so far.

The eagerly awaited sequel to the cult film “Dirty Dancing” continues to take shape. According to the US industry website “Deadline”, it is now clear which director the Lionsgate film studio will entrust the project to. The choice is quite surprising, because Jonathan Levine (45) should take a seat on the director’s chair.

If the name doesn’t immediately tell you something: Levine has previously worked primarily as a director of comedies. Among other things, he made films such as “The Highligen Drei Könige” or “50/50 – Freunde fürs (Über)Leben”. His career got rolling in 2006, however, with the horror slasher “All The Boys Love Mandy Lane”. In 2013, he mixed the two genres with the zombie romantic comedy Warm Bodies.

According to the report, Levine was initially only to produce the film and co-write the screenplay. But during the writing process he “fell in love with the old and the new characters”.

In addition to Jennifer Gray, as many as possible should play in the original film

It wasn’t until the end of April that it became known that actress Jennifer Gray (62) will once again embody Frances “Baby” Houseman in the sequel. The return of Jennifer Gray was “the most important thing for us,” quotes “Deadline” director and producer Levine. “We’ll try to involve as many people from the original as we can. We want to be respectful in every way we can.”

This also includes close contact with the survivors of “Dirty Dancing” actor Patrick Swayze (1952-2009). In 1987 he played the dance teacher Johnny Castle alongside Jennifer Grey. “Johnny is a part of Baby’s journey through history,” Levine said. Swayze died of cancer in 2009 at the age of 57.

But you still have to be patient for concrete casting news apart from Jennifer Grey. It only means that talks are currently being held. There should also be a list of names that would be suitable for the male lead.

This is also known for the sequel

According to Levine, fans of the “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack can already look forward to it. In addition to hip-hop from the 90s, the sequel will also fire off songs from the original. So you have to do without “Time Of My Life”, “Hungry Eyes” and Swayze’s “She’s Like The Wind”. Even if that’s hard to imagine.

It is not yet clear when exactly the “Dirty Dancing” sequel can be expected. According to “Deadline”, production will start this year, with a rough release date of 2024.
