Juan Valentín confesses that El Charro de México cut short his career

Even a day after the bioseries of don Vicente Fernandez The last king, the son of the people in the midst of so much controversy with the Fernández family, the producer Reynaldo Lopez he uncovered the sewer through his social networks commenting, among other things, that “Vicente controlled who could sing in a palenque, and if a businessman tried to hire another vernacular singer, he threatened to cancel his presentation; he did the same on the radio and in the press. If ranchera music almost ended in Mexico, it was thanks to him.”

Given this, we interviewed Juan Valentín, who at some point learned that in many places he could not appear because Vicente Fernández did not allow it.

Is it true that because of Vicente Fernández many doors were closed to him?
I do not intend to make firewood from the fallen tree, because he is no longer with us, but there were always rumors that he did everything so that many of us would not have work.

What was it that was happening?
My music was not played in Mexico, I could not enter any palenque, it was the same to be on television programs, I very rarely appeared. I won a contest on the Raúl Velasco program, I was with Verónica Castro and already, and despite the fact that my songs were very successful, they didn’t call me.

So what was he doing?
I went to the villages, to the most remote radio stations so that they could play me. It was very difficult, despite the fact that they always recognized my talent for singing, I already have a 55-year career. My voice is a very different style, but even so I was out of all the scenarios, of all the media.

Going to try your luck in the US, how did it work out for you?
Well, I had to try; ranchera music was practically finished here, there was no diffusion or opportunities, and not because there was no talent, we were banned.

Were you ever a friend of Vicente Fernández?
I knew Vicente long before he became famous, we even worked together in some places in Guadalajara, he in El Zarape and I in El Nopal; we were supposed to have a good friendship, so I considered it. And I make the clarification, I was a balladeer, I didn’t sing ranchero, the same representative, Rafael de Valdez, managed us for a while. One fine day I get the opportunity to record in Mexico, after having fought him a lot, but they change me to the ranchero, and that’s where we no longer fit in, I stopped being his friend.

But you followed your dreams…
Of course, we recorded in Musart, which no longer exists, there was Antonio Aguilar, who at that time was about 50 years old, and they wanted a young ranchera voice, I was 27, they convinced me to change genre. With the ranchero festival I got second place, I was sure that more doors would open for me, and it turns out not, I was banned from radio stations.

That was surely a big disappointment…
My biggest concern was to get my family ahead; Of course, I also wanted to savor the honey of triumph, but we knew where it all came from, and no way.

What did the businessmen tell you when they had to push back a project?
I remember that a businessman, José Béjar –I was recording with him at EMI Capitol and he pulled me over to CBS–, told me: “Think about it a lot, because Vicente is there and he is not going to let you leave”, and I told him: “I am going to sign for America, I don’t think he’s going to do anything.” And I started recording with CBS; My first album was with very well done Christmas songs, and I am sad to see that my album is released in February, when it should have been released in October or November. I recorded another album and in the United States it was heard very well, but in Mexico they didn’t release it. I recorded another one and the same thing, until I went to the manager and asked him; The time came when I annoyed him so much, until he told me: “I’m going to give you your letter of withdrawal, because if we release your album in Mexico, we have the threat that Vicente will leave”.

And what he did?
I went to another company, IM de Nacho Morales (RIP); He gave me the opportunity to record, I proposed to pay homage to Martín Urieta, I knew him since I was making movies, I took him abroad, and the businessman told me that everything was already recorded by Martín, Here between us he recorded it with Vicente I asked him what the problem was, I was going to put my own style on it.

But by then, Vicente was already an idol, right?
Exactly, he was very successful, who was going to take it away from him? He did very good things, he had a great voice, he didn’t need to overshadow anyone or put his foot down.

Now he is no longer with us, will you forgive him?
What’s done is done, I have nothing to forgive him for, he’s resting now and I hope he’s with God. Since 2005 I decided to leave Mexico, there was no point in staying here. In the United States they called me a lot, there nobody could boycott me, the laws are more rigid. Now I am advertised as The Last of the Greats.

His voice is still very good…
Time hasn’t affected me at all, my voice is whole, I take good care of myself, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I’m very fond of my house, now my grandchildren. During the week, when I don’t have many things, I spend time with them, I’m very happy and very healthy, I don’t have any illness, I’ve already been married to my wife for 50 years, we’ve been very happy, she has helped and supported me in everything, we take our children out, I always tried to have them close in my presentations.

Anything you want to say to the Fernández family?
As I told you at the beginning, I do not want to make firewood from the fallen tree, may God bless him and take care of his family from there, to whom I send a very affectionate greeting. I greatly admire Alejandro’s voice and that of his son, I recognize his professionalism… In this career there is something for everyone.
