Kanye West, Will Smith, OJ Simpson… Kendrick Lamar’s metamorphoses in the clip for “The Heart Part 5”

First single from the long-awaited “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers”, this title is accompanied by a clip in which the artist takes on the appearance of many American celebrities.

After five years of waiting, he is back. A few days before the release of his new album Mr. Morale & The Big Stepperson May 13, the American rapper Kendrick Lamar revealed by surprise this Sunday a first excerpt from his highly anticipated project.

A universal message

Entitled The Heart Part 5this new piece that samples the classic I Want You by Marvin Gaye, is accompanied by a clip. The quote “I am. Each of us..” is displayed in the preamble of this clip, directed by Dave Free and Kendrick Lamar himself.

The rapper from Compton then starts rapping in front of a dark red canvas while using deep fake technology, his face takes on the appearance of many famous American personalities: Kobe Bryant, Kanye West, Will Smith, OJ Simpson, Jussie Smollett or Nipsey Hussle, murdered in 2019.

The song’s lyrics stick to the changing faces of the artist. Thus, when Kendrick Lamar turns into Kanye West, he begins his verse with “Friends bipolar” (bipolar friends), in reference to the mental illness from which the artist suffers.

The cover of the single also refers to these different personalities: there is a montage made from the hands of the celebrities embodied by Kendrick Lamar in his clip.

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers will follow the album Damn by Kendrick Lamar, released in 2017 and awarded a Pulitzer Prize, a first for a rapper.
