It’s official. Amazon announced the title and release date of its new series based on the famous Lord of the Rings trilogy. ‘The Rings of Power’ is the spin-off that the streaming platform is preparing and will arrive this year on September 2.
Based on ‘The Silmarillion’, the collection of works by JRR Tolkien and posthumously edited by his son Christopher Tolkien, this series will expand the history of Middle-earth thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Although the teaser does not include a preview of what the series will be, you can see how a ring is forged.
“Three rings for the elven kings under heaven. Seven for the dwarf lords in stone palaces. Nine for the mortal men doomed to die. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, in the land of Mordor where the shadows lie.”, points to the voiceover that accompanies the description of the video.
Although nothing is confirmed, this history would contemplate events such as the initial forging of the titular rings, the rise of Sauron, the fall of Númenor and the last alliance of elves.
“Until now, audiences have only seen the story of the One Ring on screen, but before there was one, there were several… and we are excited to share this unique story.”, scriptwriters JD Payne and Patrick McKay said at a press conference, according to Cinemanía.
Recorded 100% in New Zealand, the first season of the series can be seen through Prime and it is planned to broadcast one episode per week.
‘The Rings of Power‘ hopes to surpass the success of game of Thrones, on HBO, and, The Witcher, on Netflix.
According to Diario Criterion, Morfydd Clark (Debbie Hickman in Patrick Melrose) would play Galadriel; Joseph Mawle (Benjen Stark in Game of Thrones) would be the villain Oren; and Markella Kavenagh and Max Baldry will have other important roles that have not yet been revealed.
