Madonna biopic project with Julia Garner abandoned

Universal Studio is canceling production on the Madonna biopic as the singer prepares to kick off her 40-year tour.

Madonna’s biopic will not see the light of day in the end. As revealed by the media varietythis project announced in 2020 was canceled at Universal Studio, while the singer has just unveiled her Celebration Tour, a world tour to mark her 40-year career.

The biopic, which was still in development until 2022, was to trace the star’s beginnings in music to her rise as the queen of pop. To be as faithful as possible to this story, it was the singer herself who had to make this feature film.

Madonna was to work as a co-writer on the project, alongside Diablo Cody, winner of the Best Screenplay Oscar for Juno in 2007.

In June 2022, actress Julia Garner, winner of an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe, was offered the role of Madonna in this biopic. The 28-year-old New York actress was selected from a dozen candidates, including Alexa Demie (Euphoria), Florence Pugh (Midsommar) and singers Bebe Rexha and Sky Ferreira.

On July 15, Madonna will kick off her anniversary Celebration Tour in Vancouver, Canada before crossing North America and kicking off the European leg of her tour on October 14 in London. The popstar will notably pass through the Accor Arena in Paris on November 12, 13 and 19, 2023 and will complete his tour in Amsterdam on December 2.
