The director announced on social networks to have finished writing a book evoking what takes place before and after the events told in the 1995 film.

Heat, the famous thriller by Michael Mann with Al Pacino and Robert de Niro, will be entitled to a prequel and a sequel. Michael Mann will not exploit this story in the form of audiovisual fiction, but as a book.

The director announced on social networks to have finished writing a book evoking what takes place before and after the events told in the 1995 film.

The plot will focus on the youth in prison of bandit Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and the childhood of his accomplice Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer). The novel will also explore the past of Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), the detective who tracks them through Los Angeles.

“A very rich history”

“I’ve dreamed of extending the story of Heat for years. These characters have a very rich history before 1995, and there are loads of possibilities of what their lives could have been like. [après]“, specifies the director with Deadline. He collaborated for the occasion with the novelist Meg Gardiner.

Heat 2 will be the first book written by Michael Mann. The book does not yet have a French release date. It will be published in English on August 9 by HarperCollins. Michael Mann has been working on this project since 2016.

Heat was a commercial and critical success, noted in particular for its cinematography and its long, meticulously orchestrated action scenes. The film has created vocations among many directors, and even the French robber Redoine Faïd, king of the multi-recidivist escape, said he was inspired by it for his van attacks.
