With “great possibility” Miss Universe will be held in Puerto Rico next year, as confirmed by Jorge Pérez, regional manager of ASM Global, a company that manages the Puerto Rico Coliseum.
“We continue in communication. By 2022 it seems that the opportunity has closed, but there is a great possibility that it will be in 2023. There is a lot of interest. That is another event that has global reach. It is seen in almost the whole world and it is what we want to do”, Pérez highlighted in an interview with EL VOCERO.
The international contest cannot be held on the Island this year, because the Coliseum is full of December. In fact, the 14 functions of Wisin and Yandel prevent events from being held at the facility since the end of November, Pérez explained.
ASM Global gave Miss Universe the months of September and October of this year as an alternative. However, it does not work for the beauty organization in logistical terms, since the countries have until September 19 to choose their candidates.
Miss Universe showed interest in making Puerto Rico her venue again since last year, when she approached ASM Global to verify availability of Choliseo dates. In fact, earlier this year, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierlusi, confirmed that he had talks to hold the event on the Island this year or next.
If it materializes, it would not be the first time that Miss Universe has been held on Puerto Rican soil. The first occasion was in 1972. Then in 2001, the most remembered by Puerto Ricans, since Denise Quiñones won the fourth universal crown at the Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum in Bayamón. In 2002 it was also held on the Island, where Quiñones crowned Oxana Fedorova. Two decades have passed since then.
To reinforce the use of a mask
On the other hand, from this weekend those who attend the Puerto Rico Coliseum must wear a mask, on the recommendation of the Convention District and the Department of Health.
Pérez acknowledged that it will be a challenge for the public to resume the mask, after weeks in which the audience had the option not to do so.
“We are once again focusing on the Pontela Pal Choli campaign, what it is in this particular event and we are going to raise awareness of the importance of having a mask in events of a thousand people or more,” he said.
He added that he is evaluating resuming the campaign of colored masks, depending on the concert that is held in the center.
Your Urban Music Awards and Youth Awards are coming
On the other hand, he announced that the Coliseum is preparing to receive the Premios Tu Música Urbano and Premios Juventud, in June and July, respectively.
“These are events that we also want, that the Coliseum be for international projection and all the events that we can have television exposure throughout the United States or Latin or international markets, are extremely important. We have made an effort, within a very busy schedule, to make room for these time-consuming events. A production of these can prevent you from doing programming in ten days, because they are complex montages that require television. We have made an effort to accommodate them because we have an important role, not only to do concerts, but to promote Puerto Rico as an entertainment destination, as a business destination, as a tourism destination,” Pérez stressed.
