On Wednesday (January 4th) Rosi Mittermaier died at the age of 72 after a serious illness surrounded by her family. While her loved ones mourn her, celebrity friends also commemorate the professional athlete.

Monika Gruber said goodbye to Rosi Mittermaier on Instagram. “I have just learned of the death of skiing legend Rosi Mittermaier, which is deeply shocked,” she writes in her story and posts a black and white photo of the deceased. The cabaret artist also remembers earlier encounters: “Every time I played in Garmisch, I imagined her with her husband Christian and I was able to get to know an incredibly warm, down-to-earth, lovable, modest and humorous woman.”

Maria Höfl-Riesch thanks Rosi Mittermaier for her sporting commitment

The former German ski racer Maria Höfl-Riesch reacted with deep sadness to the news of Rosi Mittermaier’s death. “It’s a huge shock. Of course 72 is much too early and I’m incredibly sad,” said the 38-year-old of the German Press Agency on Thursday. “I thank her for everything. Rosi has made sure that women’s sport is perceived differently,” added Höfl-Riesch.

Rosi Mittermaier had a great influence on the sports world in Germany. Herbert Hainer, President of FC Bayern, reports how he witnessed the 1976 Olympic success of the ski legend up close: “Rosi Mittermaier was one of the greatest German athletes and a unique Bavarian figurehead. We will all miss her dedication to her fellow human beings, her big heart and her unforgettable devotion.”

After her death, IOC President Thomas Bach praised ski icon Rosi Mittermaier as a “sympathetic and credible ambassador” for the sport. “She inspired us all with her warmth and her laughter. That’s why she will always be remembered as ‘Gold-Rosi’ not only because of her two Olympic gold medals,” said the head of the International Olympic Committee on Thursday.
