Oscar Awards 2022: Coda, where Eugenio Derbez acted, wins as best film

What is Code about?

The family is the theme that surrounds the entire plot, but with one exception, almost all the members are deaf and dumb, except Ruby Rossi (Emilia Jones), high school senior and protagonist.

Every day he gets up at three in the morning to go to work together with his father Frank (Troy Kotsur) and older brother Leo (Daniel Durant) in the small fishing boat they own.

This teenager, being the only one who can hear and speak, had to become her family’s interpreter since she was little and learned sign language to be able to communicate her family with the rest of the world.

She feels a great responsibility and feels especially protective of her father and mother (Marlee Matlin, Oscar winner), despite this and the difficulties she discovers that singing makes her happy.

It all starts with wanting to get closer to the boy she likes, Miles (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, an actor you may have seen on Sing Street) and thanks to that she enrolls in the school choir creating a connection with her teacher Bernardo Villalobos (Eugenio Derbez). , a teacher who manages to make Ruby believe in her and her talent.

Everything begins to get complicated when Professor Bernardo tells Ruby about an audition to be able to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and offers her help to prepare it since everything seems to be against her: economic limitations, leaving her family to you need and discover the world outside that you never thought you knew.

Written and directed by Siân Heder, and based on the award-winning French film La Familia Belier, it features a cast of deaf and hearing actors which makes it even more worth seeing.
