Schumer, Hall and Sykes: Here’s what you need to know about the Oscar hosts

For four years, the Academy Awards had to do without a host. But what was supposed to make the cracked odds skyrocket again had the opposite effect. And so in 2022 there will again be a red thread in the form of hosts. For the upcoming Oscars on March 27, those responsible pulled three women out of a hat to lead the evening: Amy Schumer (40), Regina Hall (51) and Wanda Sykes (58). Who is the trio making Oscar history?

Amy Schumer

The best-known of the three women in this country is comedian Amy Schumer. Contrary to the usual path of a comedian in the USA, she was not known for the cult TV show “Saturday Night Live”. She earned her first spurs in small clubs as a stand-up comedian. It took almost ten years before she was allowed to celebrate her breakthrough on TV. She landed her own show, Inside Amy Schumer, on Comedy Central, which earned her an Emmy in 2015.

Also in 2015, Schumer was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People. In addition, her career as an actress also picked up speed this year. In the comedy “Dating Queen” she got the female lead alongside Tilda Swinton. More followed in “Girlstrip” and “I Feel Pretty”. Last but not least, in 2015 she proved she could host a big evening event – in the form of the MTV Movie Awards.

Regina Hall

Co-moderator Regina Hall took an even more unusual career path. She first got her degree in journalism from New York University. Professionally, however, she should end up somewhere else. After the first smaller roles, she became famous through the slapstick series “Scary Movie”. In the first four parts she embodied the character Brenda Meeks, the best friend of the main character Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris).

Since then, Hall has mainly appeared in lighter comedies, but she also showed her serious acting from time to time. For example in the coming-of-age drama “The Hate U Give” from 2019 or in the revenge thriller “Law of Revenge” alongside Gerard Butler.

Wanda Sykes

Even crazier is the career of this year’s Oscar host number three, Wanda Sykes. Because she worked for the NSA, the US National Security Agency, for a while. According to her autobiography, she worked there for five years as a contract specialist before radically changing professions.

She earned her first spurs and an Emmy on the “Chris Rock Show”, followed by her own television series “Wanda at Large”. Her film career began in 2005 with the comedy Monster-in-Law, in which she starred alongside Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda. In 2021 she was last seen on the screen – in the crime comedy “Breaking News in Yuba County”, in which her Oscar colleague Regina Hall was also seen.

Three women, one debut

In the long history of the Oscars, no three women have led the show – so the upcoming trio will definitely make history in that regard. By the way, the last host so far was a man: in 2017 and 2018 Late Night presenter Jimmy Kimmel (54) was given this honor.
