Separations after decades: This is how the celebs fell in love

There is no guarantee of love – not even after decades of living together. Many celebrities have had to experience this, most recently Maria Furtwängler (55) and Vitali Klitschko (51).

The marriage of Maria Furtwängler and Hubert Burda (82) broke up after more than 30 years. This was confirmed by the spokeswoman for the “Tatort” actress when asked by the news agency spot on news. A statement also said that they had “been going their separate ways for some time”.

Just a day later, the news of another celebrity marriage that ended after decades made headlines: Vitali Klitschko and his wife Natalia (48) filed for divorce together after 26 years together.

Thomas Gottschalk: daring in old age

Other celebrity examples have already shown that 20 or more years together are no guarantee for the promise of “till death do you part”. Thomas Gottschalk (72) announced the separation from his wife Thea (76) in 2019 after 42 years of marriage, a shock to many fans of the moderator. At Markus Lanz (53) he explained his decision: “If you notice that the distance you still have to walk is getting shorter, you become a little more daring. I have the daring that I have not allowed myself in my life finally granted.”

Iris Berben (72) also said goodbye to Gabriel Lewy in 2006 after 32 years together. However, the two were never married. In 2014, she explained to the magazine “Neon” about the process of separation: “Many people can marry beautifully, but not separate nicely. It’s a question of character.” She and her ex are “best friends,” said the actress.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Marius Müller-Westernhagen

Arnold Schwarzenegger (75) fathered a son outside of his marriage – with his housekeeper Mildred Baena. Shortly before the actor officially announced this, he separated from his wife Maria Shriver (66). A little later she filed for divorce in July 2011 after more than 25 years of marriage. “I totally screwed that up,” the politician and actor admitted in his memoir.

Marius Müller-Westernhagen (73) and his wife Romney separated in 2013 after 25 years of marriage. In an interview with the “Bild” newspaper, Müller-Westernhagen emphasized that their love was “more beautiful than any love song” and expressed regret about the end of the relationship: “It was a very painful experience for both of us to come to the realization to be that something that was dreamed of for eternity can finally die in this way.”

Christine Neubauer: “I have no regrets”

Some could even use the separation for work: TV presenter Lisa Ortgies (56) announced in 2021 that she was getting divorced after 20 years of marriage – and processed the separation in a love podcast. After 21 years, the marriage of Christine Neubauer (60) and her husband Lambert Dinzinger (66) broke up in 2011. She found love again a little later: Neubauer is now engaged to the Chilean photographer José Campos, the “Gala” betrayed her: “I have no regrets, that applies to all areas of life.”
