This information is “not factually incorrect,” said a representative of the public prosecutor’s office, without giving any further details. The 78-year-old became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Squid Game” in January. According to reports, following the allegations against O, the South Korean culture ministry decided to halt the airing of a government commercial featuring the actor.

The dark South Korean Netflix series “Squid Game”, in which people in debt fight for their survival with children’s games, became the most successful production of the US streaming provider after its start in 2021.

The South Korean film and television industry is increasingly on the road to success in Hollywood: In 2020, the film “Parasite” by Bong Joon Ho won the Oscar for best picture. At the same time, allegations of abuse have been made in recent years against prominent representatives of the film scene in South Korea, including the late director Kim Ki Duk and the actors Cho Jae Hyun and Oh Dal Su.
