After almost two years of absence from the cinema, Johnny Depp will make a comeback under the direction of director Maïwenn, notably known for dramas My king with Vincent Cassel and polishes. For her next film, the Franco-Algerian director risks surprising her audience, unaccustomed to seeing her head towards historical dramas. With The Favorite, Maïwenn will indeed propose a return to the time of the French monarchy in a film which will therefore be carried by Johnny Depp. This is also a great first for the actor, who will play for the first time in French. He will play the character of King Louis XV and will play opposite Maïwenn, who will play the role of Jeanne du Barry, the Monarch’s mistress, in her own film. Actor Louis Garrel will also be there, as will Pierre Richard and Noémie Lvovsky. Filming should begin this Friday, July 8 in the Paris region for a period of three months.
The film should be released in French theaters in 2023 and will then be exclusively broadcast on Netflix France 15 months after its theatrical release. Indeed, Netflix Inc. has acquired the rights to broadcast Johnny Depp’s next film in France only. This agreement should notably help to finance the first role of the actor after his defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. As a reminder, Johnny Depp had been boycotted by Hollywood since the accusations of his ex-wife Amber Heard which led him to the trial from which he emerged almost entirely victorious. He had notably been ousted from the casting of Fantastic Beasts before being denied a return to the franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. However, things could change since the verdict fell and Disney would even have come back to the actor by offering him an astronomical sum for him to agree to play Jack Sparrow again.
