Sustainability award denied
Pressure on Kliemann increases – first apology

The influencer Kliemann apparently did not take the production of protective masks in the corona pandemic as seriously as he claimed. At least that’s what a television report suggests. There are first consequences for those affected.
The online retailer About You, which belongs to the Otto Group, is taking consequences after the report on influencer Fynn Kliemann and the production of protective masks. “The ZDF Magazin Royale Video has reached us and we are aware of it. We are currently examining the case internally in order to get an accurate picture of the situation,” it said. In a first step, masks from the “Oderso” brand were taken offline. According to the imprint of the “Oderso” shop, Kliemann is the managing director. The German Sustainability Award Foundation also announced that it was revoking an award that Kliemann had received in 2020. Kliemann responded with a long statement.
The background is a TV report by the satirist Jan Böhmermann on the protective mask business. In the contribution of the show “ZDF Magazin Royale” the suspicion is suggested that Kliemann could be involved in a dubious business. He advertised masks as being produced in Europe, which were actually probably made in Asia.
“I would like to formally apologize to all people, organizations and institutions who are disappointed and shocked at first glance,” writes Kliemann. At the same time, he asked for a differentiated view. Some things are wrong.
“This must never happen”
“I have to admit that I could no longer oversee the process,” the statement said. “This must never happen, so even though I wasn’t a producer or a seller, I take responsibility.” Through these omissions, not having dealt with these processes in detail, he has disappointed many.
in one “Mirror” interview he said: “I didn’t cheat, this is just misrepresentation on websites.” Furthermore, he presented himself as too trustworthy, overwhelmed and repeatedly admitted to having communicated inappropriately with friends and acquaintances. At the same time, he denied selling masks from Bangladesh or having “deliberately delivered broken masks to refugee camps”.
The company in question that put Böhmermann in contact with Kliemann is the textile manufacturer Global Tactics. Company founder Tom Illbruck said about the mask production site allegation: Masks were also produced in Bangladesh in the relevant period of 2020, not only in Europe. For example, if you, as a major customer, did not attach importance to the masks coming explicitly from a certain country or explicitly from Europe, “we offered masks there without explicitly saying where the masks came from”.
Asked about About You, Illbruck said: “According to the documents we have, there are no agreements with About You that the masks came explicitly from Portugal and that was not assured in writing at any point.”
Kliemann became known years ago with his “Kliemannsland” project – a farm north of Bremen. People come and live there from time to time. There is tinkering, screwing, chatting, making music. The fact that Böhmermann was doing research on him could also be seen from the fact that Kliemann published a list of questions from the station on Instagram and commented on it. It dealt with various topics, including donations.
