the alleged plagiarism in the chimes dress

Rare is the year in which Cristina Pedroche’s dress at the chimes does not generate controversy. Since she began presenting them in 2014, almost all the extravagant outfits that she has worn have given a lot to talk about on social networks, and not always in good terms. This year, the comments have not focused so much on whether the ‘look’ likes more or less (which also), but rather they are directed to the alleged plagiarism of another designer.

To welcome 2023, Cristina has worn her most supportive outfit to date. Composed of three pieces (a piece of figurative art on the chest, a cape and a semi-transparent skirt), this controversial look is suspiciously similar to one worn by the singer India Martínez in the video clip for ‘Conmigo’ (2019). The artist herself was in charge of uncovering this supposed plagiarism through a ‘tweet’ that has not taken long to go viral. In the image, the woman from Cordoba appears dressed in white with a top that, although it is not a dove, also simulates a sculpture. Her skirt (although in her case, without transparencies) and the ‘body painting’ detail in her hands are also very reminiscent of Pedroche’s ‘look’.

In the midst of all this controversy, Josie (the stylist who advises Cristina every year with her ‘lo0ks’ of the chimes), has had no choice but to come out and defend herself. “It was not easy to understand, there are many people who have not understood anything. We wanted this, if you compare the bells of other chains, no one has had messages of this type. This year we needed to do this, really. I cannot get bored or bored in no time and I’ve been doing this for eight years,” he began by saying.

On the accusations of plagiarism, the stylist has said that “There are accusations of plagiarism every year when they are very clear references in a fashion game, which is quite normal.” And he continued explaining how the creative design process was: “In 2022 I saw a ruinous world, I began to document myself to make a layer. I wanted to make crystallized garbage, but it was a mess. But this packaging is loaded with the wishes of people who deserve a second chance. It’s the victims who have customized this beautiful model. It’s an incredible job. I’m super happy”.

As Josie says, this is not the only time she has faced criticism for alleged plagiarism with the ‘look’ of Cristina Pedroche’s chimes. One of the most notorious controversies was in 2019, when the presenter wore a set of flowers suspiciously similar to another by Yves Saint Laurent created in 1999.
