Amber Heard has released her first statement after the verdict was announced.
The 36-year-old actress described the ruling as a “setback” for women in the post-#MeToo era.
“The disappointment I feel today is indescribable. I am heartbroken that the mountain of evidence was still insufficient to withstand my ex-husband’s disproportionate power and influence,” Heard said.
“I’m even more disappointed by what this ruling means for other women,” she continued, noting that it was a “setback.”
“It throws the clock back to a time when a woman who spoke up and spoke out could be publicly shamed and humiliated. It throws back the idea that violence against women should be taken seriously.”
She added: “I believe that Johnny’s lawyers managed to get the jury to overlook the key issue of free speech and to ignore evidence that was so conclusive that we won in Britain.”
“I’m sad that I lost this case. But I’m even sadder that I seem to have lost a right I thought I had as an American – to speak freely and openly.”
