Top Gun 2: the director explains why Charlie Blackwood, Maverick’s girlfriend, and Goose’s wife are not in the second part

While Top Gun 2 is eagerly awaited and that its release at the Cannes Film Festival is fast approaching, director Joseph Kosinski gave an explanation on the casting of the film. Two of the major characters of the first installment have not been called back to give the reply to Tom Cruise.

Top Gun: Maverick will center on the main character of the first installment, Maverick, in a plot that is set 30 years later. The one who was and is still embodied by Tom Cuise will now be a teacher and will notably have as a pupil the son of Goose, “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller). If the film presents itself as a continuity of the first Top Gun and that several actors have been recalled, Kelly Mc Gillis, who played the role of Charlie Blackwood, the girlfriend of Maverick, and Meg Ryan, who played the wife of “Goose” are not part of it. Joseph Kosinski explained this choice in a recent interview with Insider and claimed that these two characters were never considered in the sequel. “I didn’t want every plot to always be backwards,” said the director before adding: “It was important to introduce new characters”. The new cast includes Miles Teller, Glen Powell (Set It Up), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Monica Barbaro (The Good Cop) or Jennifer Connelly (An exceptional man).

Top Gun 2 will be revealed on Wednesday May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival before being released in theaters on May 25.
