What to eat when we have Covid-19 and we stay at home

Nutrition specialist Rita Medina warns that people who suffer from Covid-19 are in a state of permanent inflammation, for this reason those who suffer from underlying diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, fatty liver, kidney failure, are more affected.

These people require special and adequate food, so it is recommended that they make a personal Covid-19 Diet plan with a nutritionist, after medical consultation.

What do we eat?

Food is the basis for coping with aggression and ensuring the repair of tissues and organs affected by the spread of the virus. Also, you have to keep good hydration, drink fluids, especially in periods of high fever. Liquids should be clear, without sugar or honey, at room temperature and not take them all at once or in one shot. Drink during the day between 6 and 8 glasses of water and increase 1/2 glass of flaxseed water every hour.

Consume easily digestible foods, well cooked in soups, stews or baked, white meats, chicken or fish, especially in periods of gastroenteritis (diarrhea) will prevent bloating, colic, and help stop continuous trips to the bathroom.

Proteins favor defenses and tissue repair. They are found in eggs, very rich in zinc, an essential mineral for the proper functioning of the immune system and also because they contain the nine essential amino acids.

Well-cooked grilled, steamed, baked or bain-marie meats. Make them without seasoning. If you use beef, remember that it is important to cook twice and remove the water from the first cooking.

Fruits in the form of compote or boiled soft drinks to improve its flavor helping the tolerance of medications. Better cooked or steamed (so that many vitamins are not lost), select those that are easily digestible such as apple, pineapple, pear, peach.

Foods rich in omega 3, such as olive oil, flaxseed, sesame, seeds in general.

Eat less = More health

Decrease the quantities, but increase small volumes every 2 or 3 hours, because lack of appetite, decreased taste and problems such as gastritis, heartburn and diarrhea may occur.

Reduce the amount of salt therefore, also avoid the use of cubes or processed broths, instead use herbs or natural condiments to enhance the flavor, thus maintaining blood pressure at normal levels and preventing hypertensive crises; in addition to reducing kidney work that can occur due to Covid-19.

Avoid fats of animal origin and fried preparationsfried, breaded or battered since the liver is under saturation by the drugs and the intestine is in functional alteration by the virus.

Eliminate simple carbohydrates

Sugar, honey, sweets, desserts, white flour and pasta are highly inflammatory and also raise blood glucose levels, and decompensation can occur due to infection.

Decrease amounts of other carbohydrates

Select the rice, the potato, the sweet potato, the water crackers, the cornstarch crackers, the addition of cornstarch as a thickener. These are noble foods with the gastrointestinal tract and do not produce glycemic increases if they are provided in small amounts and distributed throughout the day.

Schedules for food and medication

They must be respected to avoid drug-food interactions or gastrointestinal intolerances. Likewise, as the infection goes on for around 7 to 10 days, more food can be added and the cooking can also be modified.
